There are many flavours of PDF, and often the files that are delivered aren't correct.  Therefore International Organization for Standards (www.iso.org) have developed a standard of PDF for the high-resolution printing industry. This standard, PDF/X-1a, has been specifically designed for the blind exchange of files, or the passing of files from the creator to the pre-press service provider without any intervention or manipulation.
